Melatonin & Valerian — Natural Support for a Better Night's Sleep
Share
A good night's sleep is one of the most important factors in overall health and wellbeing. Yet for millions of people in the UK, getting consistent, quality sleep is a real challenge. Melatonin and Valerian are two of the most widely used natural ingredients for sleep support — but how do they work, and what's the difference?
What Is Melatonin?
Melatonin is a hormone produced naturally by the pineal gland in the brain. It plays a central role in regulating the body's sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm). Production increases in the evening as light fades, signalling to the body that it's time to sleep. Factors such as shift work, jet lag, screen exposure and ageing can all disrupt natural melatonin production.
What Is Valerian?
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a flowering plant whose root has been used for centuries as a traditional remedy for sleep and relaxation. It is thought to influence GABA receptors in the brain — the same pathway targeted by many conventional sleep medications — though through a much gentler, natural mechanism.
How Do They Work Together?
Melatonin and Valerian complement each other well. Melatonin helps to regulate the timing of sleep, while Valerian supports relaxation and the transition into restful sleep.
